The name Gujranwala come from the word “Gujjar” (cattle graziers). The town was named after Chaudhry Gujar who owned the well that supplied the region.
Thirty years ago, Gujranwala was a small, sleepy town, with small houses and less shops. There were some horse-drawn carriages and very less cars.
But today it
is very large and noisy city.
When Muslims
migrated from India they settled in Sialkot, Lahore and Gujranwala with a metal
work tradition.
These migrated
people found a job on a small scale industry. This influenced the land owners who
owned lands on the edge of town. They sold their lands to the metal workers,
who wanted to establish their own shop.
PrivateSector Housing was built there. In this way the town expanded outwards.
